STRETCH MARKS is an anthology that captures the humanity of pregnancy and oncoming of motherhood/guardianship. Through heightened prose, Vanessa Spence opens the conversation on motherhood/parenthood to include the taboo topics of generational trauma, regret, shame, depression, imposter syndrome, blame, and self-doubt.

 Stretch Marks: Part 1

written + performed by: Vanessa spence

Inspired by the pregnancy in poetry, Stretch Marks: Part 1 follows a young woman of colour in the moments after discovering her pregnancy. Through prose, poetry, song and movement, she takes the audience on a journey that brings to light ancestral traumas, problematic familial cycles and self doubts as she battles with the decision to bring forth life.

Thank you to all who made this production a beautiful reality.

By amalgamating peer encouragement and the creative arts, Stretch Marks Workshops focus on the mental health of mothers of colour - all ages and socio-economic status - to inspire self-confidence, self-expression, and a more active, inclusive and diverse parenting style.
